The Port Isabel Lighthouse & Museums

The Museums of Port Isabel is a complex consisting of three diverse facilities, the Port Isabel Historic Museum, the Treasures of the Gulf Museum, and the Point Isabel Lighthouse. All three are within walking distance of each other and are open year around to the public.

Gladys Porter Zoo

The Gladys Porter Zoo is an oasis nestled in the center of Brownsville, Texas. With 26 acres of lush tropical plants and some 1,600 animals, the Gladys Porter Zoo is known for its successes in breeding endangered species of wildlife.

State Farm Arena

Catch a Killer Bees hockey match, a Vipers basketball game, the Circus or a Monster Jam at this, $20 million, arena built in 2003, to support a growing Rio Grande Valley population.


Harlingen rests in the heart of the Rio Grande Valley of south Texas, about 30 miles from the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. The city covers more than 34 square miles, and is the second largest city in Cameron County and the sixth largest in the Rio Grande Valley.

McAllen Convention Center

The McAllen Convention Center, which opened in March of 2007, was designed to capture the elements of its surroundings, with bi-cultural themes and tropical accents.

Coastal Studies Lab

The U.T.P.A. Coastal Studies Lab, located in Isla Blanca Park at the south end of the Island, has aquarium displays of fish and other marine life indigenous to the area, as well as an extensive shell collection.

Dolphin and Nature Research Center

Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge

Find out more about the refuge and its wildlife through the exhibits and videos at the visitor center. Some of the best birding can be found in the area surrounding the visitor center. The refuge is open daily from sunrise to sunset.

South Padre Turtle Lady

Founded in 1977 by Ila Loetscher, Sea Turtle Inc. has proven to be one of the foremost authorities on endangered sea turtles. Learn about the various species of sea turtles, their life cycles, habitat, travel patterns, etc.


If you’re into birding, this is the place to be. You can spend your entire vacation here with us and never see the same bird twice. Ha! Ha!

The World Birding Center

Not just one, but nine unique locations in the Rio Grande Valley. Each site of the World Birding Center has its own attractions for both the first time visitor and expert birder.

Sabal Palm Audubon Sanctuary

Audubon Texas has partnered with the Gorgas Science Foundation of Brownsville, Texas to reopen Sabal Palm to the public. The property is open 7 days a week from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The entry fees are $5 per person. Directions from almost are on the website.

Black Dragon Cruises

The Black Dragon Pirate Adventure is a two hour interactive pirate-themed excursion on the Laguna Madre. The trip includes sword fighting, water gun battles, tall-tale-telling, hand painted pirate tattoos, singing, dancing, games, a treasure hunt, bounty for all, dolphin watching and whatever other merriment we can concoct.

The Laguna Madre Nature Trail is 1500 feet of boardwalk giving the public access to the wetlands of the Laguna Madre.

Master Sand Sculptors make the sand come alive as they compete for over $3000 in cash prizes!

This year the festival moves to a picturesque ONE ACRE stretch of beach on the north end of South Padre Island. With the generous cooperation of Clayton's Resort Beach Bar & Grill, the La Quinta Inn and Suites and the Hilton Garden Inn, this new location will make it easier to get to and easier to park!

Admission is FREE and will include live music, art booths, amateur competitions and an exciting new evening event!
